...Best Decisions

Ending our three month trip in South America on the Ilha Grande proved to be one of the best decisions we made. Having been highly recommended by many fellow travellers, we were not disappointed. The island and its people are fantastic; the numerous beaches beautiful, the food delicious (our favourite was shrimp stroganoff, which we had many times in various restaurants), the weather gorgeous (even though it was only May/June) and the caipirinhas made for very interesting nights. Staying in an apartment in Vila do Abraao, we were within easy walking distance of the pretty beaches of Praia Preta and Abraaozinho and the famous surfing beach of Lopes Mendes. We also had easy access to various boat tours (trips to the Lagoa Verde and Azul are essential), selection of restaurants/ice-cream parlours and shops, which made Vila do Abraao the perfect base for exploring the island. After staying 12 fabulous days, we were very sad to leave and are already planning our next visit to this paradise-like island.

Amazing Asalem!

Ilha Grande is a lush and paradise-like island with many things to do, from visting the remains of the notorious old prision to wonderful beaches. On top of that, staying at Asalem completed our unforgettable experience, with complete calm, spectacular views, and very friendly and personal owners and staff. If you are looking for something less touristic and closer to nature, yet with comfort and style (the split-level open door rooms are great) this is a place we would highly recommend. We hope to return soon...

An incredible paradise

My wife, daughter and I spent 3 nights at Asalem on Ilha Grande in January 2006. The accomodations were simple and slightly rustic, but very comfortable. The staff at Asalem were very, very nice and were able to speak English so that was a great help. Breakfast, which was included in the price of the room was okay (limited fresh fruit, breads, cheese, ham, etc), but nothing like other hotels we stayed at in Brazil. Their dinner menu didn\'t have many options, but the three nights we ate there, the fish proved to be spectacular (grilled or in cocnut milk) and very affordable (25 reals). The weather was great the entire time we were there...hot and sunny. We did a schooner trip to Blue Lagoon to snorkel. It was a day long trip which included snorkelling at Blue Lagoon (very crowded with other tour boats) and stops at 3 other beaches (including lunch at one beach restaurant) on the return to Abraao. We also did a day-trip to Lopes Mendes beach which included a boat ride to a beach located a few bays north of Abraao and a 30 minute hike over a hill to Lopes. This beach was fascinating! The currents were a little strong at the end of the beach where the trail exits, but if you surg this was the part of the beach to be at. Because my daughter is only 3, we decided to walk to the opposite end of the beach (3 km) to find calmer waters. We found the \"calm\" end of the beach to be quiet (hardly any people) and nice for swimming. The only negative is that there is very limited shade (some close to the forest edge) at the far end, so be prepared for many hours in the open sun. All in all, we had a great time on Ilha Grande and I would recommend it to anybody. As for our pousada (Asalem), I would recommend it as well. It is a small, quiet place with great views, swimming beach nearby and very friendly staff. The only negative thing about Asalem is that it is located about 1 km down the beach from Abraao village. Asalem offers water shuttle service, but they charge you for it. There is also a trail that runs between Asalem and Abraao, but we never hiked it due to time and travel with a 3 year old (trail is a little rugged for young folk).

Heaven on earth

Ilha Grande is HEAVEN ON EARTH! I stayed there for only of 4 days but those 4 days were some of the best days of my life. I have never enjoyed a place so much. I have such wonderful fond memories there that I am determined to go back one day. The people were so friendly and nice, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the islan itself was like paradise. I had an amazing time and i strongly recommend Ilha Grande to anyone and everyone for an experience of a lifetime!
